Snow Showers & Snow Flowers
What a lovely month April is up at the North Pole!
While many people around the world experience “April Showers bring May Flowers”, up here we have “Snow Showers bring Snow Flowers”. Let me tell you about the not-so-typical April snow showers we have here at the North Pole.
The snow is light and fluffy, very different than the snow that we experience the rest of the year. In April, the snowfall looks like flower petals rather than snowflakes; and even more lovely than that, the colors are iridescent! That means that all of the snow petals take on a beautiful hue of soft rainbow colors that change as you look at it from different angles.
Imagine you are looking out the window of your bedroom and you see it showering petals of soft blue and as you make your way through the house, it changes to green, orange, pink and yellow! It’s sort of like looking at a bowl of sweet candies or a stained-glass window. But it doesn’t stop there – as the snow falls, it takes the shape of flowers. YES! The snow builds itself into flowers! So, you can look around and see beds of Kaffir Lilly’s, Crocus, Winter Pansies, Algerian Iris, and more. My favorite is the Ranunculus. It’s my favorite because I like the name and how it is spelled. When you say the name, you really have to curl your tongue – it makes me giggle!
The Christmas Rose and Holly is the most prevalent of the snowy flowers along with the Ornamental Cabbage and Kale. Looks very much like the flowers that are found in your neighborhoods, but these flowers are made of snow…at first!
You see, the weather conditions are just right at the North Pole in April. The sun is starting to reveal its glory and the icy cold grip of winter loosens up for a short time. All of this causes the snow to create these bursts of colorful snowy flower beds. At night, under the light of the aurora borealis, the snow flowers actually glow in the dark! Can you even imagine this? It’s magical! It doesn’t last long, but when it happens each April it is cause for much excitement!
As we move into May, these snow flowers will melt and a beautiful bed of real flowers will be revealed in its place! Where snow flowers in the form of Scilla or Crocus once were are now beautiful, real fields of flowers. Our gardeners get so excited for this time of year! Our halls will be lined with fresh flower arrangements throughout the month of May, bringing smiles to all.
Spring is a time for rebirth and renewal – a sweet reward for making it through nature’s changes. I wish you all the very best spring and strength for the changes in your life!
Be good and kind, we’ll see you next time!
